It is offered at community or junior colleges, vocational or technical schools, online schools and even through correspondence courses. Sometimes in rare cases, a doctor might recruit an employee without the proper education and offer free personal training.
It could take a few years to complete the training, generally one or two depending on where you end up going. Most one year programs leave you with a certificate or diploma. Two year programs generally end with an associate degree.
The majority of schools allow students to learn through internships and volunteer work. This provides great on site experience. The students work in an actual medical office alongside existing staff. Sometimes the teacher isn't going to be there with you, so you need to pay attention to every detail. Clinical programs aren't yet available at all schools and in all programs, but if they are in your area you need to get involved. You could even land a job in the process if you work hard. Although even if you don't get the job, the hand on experience is worth it.
Working directly with a optometrist, medical assistants may be required to perform exams along with work with patients. Sometimes the medical assistant will assist the podiatrist during surgeries which provides excellent hands on training. Medical assistants are also required to manage the X-Ray machine and make sure it's working correctly while also examining castings of the feet.
After completing medical assistant school, you may wish to seek certification. Luckily this isn't a requirement in the industry, however it does show the employer that you have previous work experience and are well fit for the job. Sometimes having a certification will even result in you earning a much higher pay rate.
